February has swooshed right past me, but a few music videos stood out to me, so here we go.
- Wild East Radio – Wilder Than Who
Kicking it off with a de-tuned piano sample and a lot of editing on the beat promises a dynamic, fast paced video right from the start. As if that’s not enough energy, we are thrown into bass-boosted parts of the song, only then to be left without bass and kick drums all together. The video doesn’t feature anything technical or visually that blew me away, but it keeps up confidently with a quite demanding track.
2. 070 Shake – If You’re Free
Minimalist live session with 070 Shake that doesn’t try to be anything out of the ordinary and therefore stays confident and close to what looks like 070’s writing session. I don’t believe they usually publish acoustic songs, I think it works great. The short guitar loop reminds me of modern country or folk. Super simple visually: nicely textured old house with a couple props to play around with. It’s exactly the lack of that makes this feel more like a little reportage sequence than promo.
3. Proc Fiskal – Disease Again [4K|UHD|60FPS]
I don’t even know where to start – I have never seen anything like this. The only thing that comes close is of course by the same artists – check it out here. Tropical Hyperpop-EDM, a couple UK lads in footie jerseys enjoying a sunny day out during COVID, cleaning up a river? So far so good, but that’s definitely not all. One common thematic trope looking at their music videos seems to be vaping, which these guys apparently can’t get enough of. I don’t endorse vaping but if that means I get blessed with the visual oddity produced by Proc Fiskal, then so be it.
4. amil raja – i like u around
With the MTV music video channel shutdown earlier this year, I bet there are countless restaurant, cafe and bar owners running around hysterically, trying to figure out what in god’s name they should put on their massive TVs that are lining the walls. This video belongs on all of them, they successfully created a timeless beauty portrait that could’ve been playing since the 80s. She’s just mouthing the high pitched sample, but I think it’s a really fun take on creating a visual for what I’d still consider an instrumental.
5. American Football – Bad Moons
I’ve written a bit more about this one here, as it’s my favorite for February. 8 minutes that mesmerize and made my mind wander off, thanks to a great track and a hypnotic visual concept. Enjoy.
6. Dave – The Boy Who Played the Harp
I was debating writing a post about Dave’s newest video for his Single The Boy Who played the Harp, but it’s a prime example for words don’t do it justice- at least mine definitely wouldn’t. It’s extremely technically challenging to produce a video like this, but this track definitely deserves complexity as it’s full of political and social commentary. Get sucked in the imagery. It’s a lot to take in, given that you have to follow Dave’s densely packed lyrics and quite a lot of visual queues. I think it’s a video to come back to and it will hit even harder.
